Metro

One of the nation’s greatest public transit systems is within a short walking distance of most UKSNA residents.  Washington’s Metro system, with its soaring arched stations and simple, reliable trains, provides convenient access to metro Washington, D.C.  The King Street Metro Station provides service to either the Yellow or Blue Metro Lines that are minutes to the heart of the city.  For a list of fares and the metro’s to-the-minute schedule, click here.

Crossing at Jefferson-Houston Elementary SchoolTraffic Calming

The Upper King Street Neighborhood Association worked with city staff to develop a pedestrian improvement plan for Cameron Street.  UKSNA members sought to improve pedestrian safety and slow speeding traffic by visually narrowing the street.  Together with other local civic leagues,  the Jefferson-Houston Elementary School and others, the UKSNA supported construction of a series of “bulb-outs” that create safe places to cross the street and theoretically encourages cars to slow down.

In 2004, city contractors built bulb outs across Cameron Street and on the side streets at the intersections of West, Peyton and Harvard Streets, and added a crosswalk in front of the he main entrance of Jefferson-Houston School.   Final construction, such as the application of bright, thermoplastic lines on the street and in front of the bulb outs, is anticipated soon, however, according to staff.

While traffic calming may be theoretically sound, residents have voiced mixed opinions on the “bulb out” project implemented on Cameron Street.  Many residents say they have not noticed any appreciable decrease in speeding traffic and others continue to express concerns about the loss of limited parking spaces.  Other residents support the project as a first step, but demand that the City implement more tested methods of reducing traffic speeds, such as installing a stop sign or traffic light at Cameron or Harvard Streets.

The Upper King Street Neighborhood Association is taking a wait-and-see approach to determine the efficacy of the “bulb out” project.  The City of Alexandria will provide speed test measurements approximately six months after the completion of construction (est. April 2005) and UKSNA will share those results with members.
